Meet Amosy M’Koma, MD, Tenured Professor of Surgery, Surgical Sciences, Pathology and Cancer Biology at Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

With 25 years of experience and residency training completed in Stockholm, Sweden, Dr. M’Koma has dedicated his career to advancing the understanding and treatment of colorectal disease and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

“My journey began with patients and questions I could not answer. It continues with the hope that scientific discovery and diagnostic innovation can provide clearer answers and ultimately better outcomes for patients facing some of the most difficult decisions in IBD care.”

Despite significant advances in IBD research, Dr. M’Koma is focused on one of the field’s most important challenges: providing more objective information to guide colorectal surgeons and patients before irreversible procedures such as IPAA. His work involving DEFA5 represents a promising step toward more personalized, risk-informed, and patient-centered surgical decision-making.

His research explores biomarker discovery, histopathology, colonic ileal metaplasia, monoclonal antibody development, diagnostic epitope identification, and clinical validation. Ultimately, his goal is simple: to provide better diagnostic information that helps ensure the right operation is selected for the right patient.
